is closely associated with the Columban Ecological Institute at Dalgan Park in Ireland. He has delivered modules on Science and Religion and Encounter with the Natural World on the Masters programme in Ecology and Religion at All Hallows College, and as part of the Sabbatical Programme at the Dominican Ecology Centre (An Tairseach) in Wicklow. He was for over twenty years a Senior Lecturer in UCD’s School of Agriculture and Food Science, from which he has recently retired. He is well known for his award-winning television work on the natural and cultural heritage of the Irish landscape (in connection with which he has been described by Kevin Myers as ‘one of life’s great communicators’). And has published widely on environmental history and heritage and creation spirituality.
His published work includes the definitive textbook on Ireland’s peat-lands, books on geology and ecology, and his widely acclaimed Farming in Ireland: History, Heritage and Environment. An American edition of his influential book on Creation Spirituality, The Singing Heart of the World (Columba Press, 2010) has recently been published.
